DORA

With Betty-Lou on guitar · Place to Be · Solid Air

DORA is part of beefcake☆, and of the new wave of pop emerging across the UK. Detrimentors, beefcake☆’s debut EP, came out in May 2025, and this room first heard DORA at VOICES with Guy Chambers in April. On Side A, DORA joined Jonathan in the room and sang Place to Be from the record. Then Betty-Lou — back after singing Lilac Wine to us on the Grace night — surprised us with John Martyn’s Solid Air, a song he wrote about his friend Nick Drake. It is the record we hear whole on Tuesday 8th December.

Side B · The Screens

One world a track.

Eleven worlds, one a song — a tree planted under a pink moon that grew across the record, until, on From the Morning, the lights of the people who came after gathered in its shade. For the length of the record the screen was the only light in the room.

From the room · Lead-in

In your own words.

Before the night, eighteen of you answered Lead-in, and sixteen added your answers to the room — anonymous, never named. On the night they ringed the screen while the house filled. This is the picture you made together, kept. Thank you for it.

In a sentence, your Pink Moon

  1. Ineffably moving.
  2. I recently walked down the alley that Nick walks down, on the back cover of Pink Moon. By Hampstead ponds. His ghost still lingers…
  3. Just takes you on a most wonderful, magical journey to the depths of my soul
  4. The album I play at the end of a quiet evening at home, alone, perhaps accompanied by a small glass of single malt from the islands
  5. Nick Drake is one of my all time greats. Pink Moon packs so much into such a short run time — his words and guitar play are truly timeless.
  6. Immediately connects me to a part of my youth that feels sad, wistful and emotionally charged
  7. Raw desperate genius
  8. Probably listened to it less over the years than Five Leaves or Bryter Later, but appreciate it more as time goes on
  9. Me: takes me to a place of calm, another time. Him: don’t know the album, first proper listen!
  10. a companion over many years
